Electroencephalographic Monitoring Technology Role in Remote Ped Intensive Care Units in Rio de Janeiro, Brasil

Abstract

Neurological monitoring of pediatric patients, presents itself as a problem due to technical aspects and the necessity of specialized personnel. We evaluated the contribution of telemedicine (tele-EEG) in the diagnosis and monitoring of children admitted to the pediatric services in the state of Rio de Janeiro. General scientific literature indicates that this technology has become accessible for quick and accurate diagnoses at an affordable cost. We carried out a retrospective study in which we reviewed electroencephalographic reports done in children and adolescents, in the hospitals located at the Rio de Janeiro State, between June and September 2020. All exams were reported and delivered within 24 hours from the time of request. Also, no tests in the follow- up needed to be repeated due to technical issues. Our findings suggest Tele-EEG should be encouraged by health policymakers, not just for Brazil but as a worldwide strategy.
