Ferrous sulfate/iron

Abstract

Lack of efficacy: 2 case reports In a case series, a 2-year-old girl and a 3-year-old girl were described, who exhibited lack of efficacy during treatment with iron and ferrous sulfate, respectively for hypoferritinaemia [not all routes and dosages stated]. Patient 1: A 3-year-old girl presented in March 2018 with 3 weeks of pallor and upper respiratory infection symptoms. She was administered packed RBCs transfusion. She was discharged upon dietary education and establishment of follow-up. In August 2018, at the haematology clinic, laboratory studies revealed hypoferritinaemia in the absence of anaemia. She was prescribed ferrous sulfate supplementation 5 mg/kg/day, but it did not correct her hypoferritinaemia. Therefore, she was administered IV iron infusions, which were tolerated well. Patient 2: A 2-year-old girl presented with a Hb of 4 g/dL. She was diagnosed with hypoferritinaemia and was found to be refractory to oral iron supplementation. She was then started on IV iron therapy. However, once the IV iron was stopped, no increase in iron stores was noted.
