Mix design, durability and strength enhancement of cold mix asphalt: a state-of-the-art review

Abstract

The amendment of manufacturing cold mix asphalt (CMA) following proper mix design and strength enhancing techniques serves as an avenue to minimize the enormous volume of carbon footprint and energy consumption resulting from hot mix asphalt. In terms of methodological assumptions, the authors highlighted the mix design components and production procedure for CMA. Acceleration of strength in CMA is related chiefly to mixture curing over time, influenced by different curing regimes to simulated field curing conditions, as highlighted in this study. The additional factor that influences the mechanical strength of CMA is deeply reviewed, which helps the engineers and researchers to improve the existing CMA used in road sectors. The examples of the contents mapped in the review of strength enhancement of CMA are mixture and binder modifiers, fillers and fibers and some other recycling materials and rehabilitation techniques that may influence the sustainability of CMA. The reviewed publications expose scenarios under which different adopted materials and methods can reduce the major distress phenomenon such as fatigue and rutting of CMA. To promote the application of CMA, this manuscript reviewed a deep insight view about the technical aspects associated with CMA.
