Endoscopic Management of Pouch Bezoars, Bleeding, Inflammatory Polyps, and Other Miscellaneous Pouch Conditions

Abstract

Abstract Restorative proctocolectomy with ileal pouch-anal anastomosis is the surgical treatment of choice for patients with refractory ulcerative colitis, familial adenomatous polyposis, indeterminate colitis, and highly selected cases with Crohn’s colitis. Although this surgery is associated with excellent outcomes, low mortality, and high patient satisfaction, complications may arise. Some of the complications are amenable for endoscopic management. The endoscopic management of bezoars, bleeding, twisting (pouch volvulus), and compartmentalized pouch is reviewed here. Although these complications are rare, they can be associated with significant morbidity if not recognized in a timely manner.
