Introduction: Cognitive Foundations for Improving Mathematical Learning
Abstract
Abstract In this introductory chapter, we flesh out the detailed descriptions of specific mathematics interventions or classes of intervention provided in the core chapters. We do so with discussion of intervention research more generally, including methodological issues, and the cognitive mechanisms that support mathematics learning as related to intervention approaches. We also touch upon several mathematics interventions that were not covered in the core chapters in order to provide the reader with a more complete overview of the efforts that are being made to improve children s mathematical learning. We close with brief discussions on how parents can influence their children s mathematical development and suggestions for improving research in this area.
