Overview of Data-Driven Solutions

Abstract

Abstract In past decades, transportation research has been driven by mathematical equations and has relied on scarce data to develop mathematical models and traffic theory. With advances in data-collection technologies and their deployment in intelligent transportation systems (ITS), the availability of transportation data has increased tremendously in recent years. This chapter presents an overview of data-driven transportation science. A general background of the motivation to promote data-driven transportation science is provided. The value of a data-driven approach to transportation analysis and decision-making is demonstrated empirically by real-world data. In addition, a review of the related methodologies and applications is given as an introduction for understanding the development history of ITS. An overview of the chapters in this book is provided as guidance for the readers. The structure and connection between the different chapters are also described, as a roadmap to help the reader have a better understanding of the material contained in this book.
