Application of biomass ash for brick manufacturing
Abstract
Abstract Bricks are the oldest and the most popular construction material for building enclosures. They are conventionally produced from clay in a tunnel kiln at high temperatures. This method is highly energy consuming and leads to enormous emission of greenhouse gases. A great number of research has been done on utilizing biomass waste as an addition to brick raw materials. By improving the use of biomass worldwide, there is a huge amount of generated biomass wastes. Commonly, due to the high energy content of these wastes, they are utilized as a fuel in small power plants and boilers. One of the latest environmental concerns is the production of a tremendous, growing amount of biomass ashes generated by waste combustion. The conventional method of landfilling is not acceptable anymore, due to several environmental problems it created. Utilizing biomass ashes in brick making procedure is promising due to their organic content and high heating value, which reduces energy requirement for brick making. Moreover, the preservation of clay resources is another advantage. In this chapter, the advantages, features, and production method of biomass waste-based bricks are presented. However, despite extensive research, the usage of waste-based bricks is quite limited. The probable reasons might be the following: problems according to delivery of the waste, pollutant the wastes contain, lack of relating standards, and besides, gradual agreement of the public and market with waste reuse.
