Shoulder Dysfunction in Breast Cancer

Abstract

Abstract Shoulder dysfunction is a common complication in breast cancer survivors that can adversely affect the level of function of the individual. Adhesive capsulitis, rotator cuff dysfunction, and subacromial impingement syndrome are common and can be sources of pain and limited movement. Risk factors for shoulder dysfunction include surgery such as mastectomy and breast reconstruction, axillary lymph node dissection, and radiation therapy. Abduction and flexion of the shoulder are commonly decreased. Imaging studies such as shoulder X-rays, MRI, musculoskeletal ultrasound, and positron emission tomography/computed tomography scans can yield useful information. Treatments include nonsteroidal antiinflammatory medications, injections, and physical therapy.
