Novel coatings to improve the performance of multilayer biopolymeric films for food packaging applications

Abstract

Abstract The increased interest in the development of bio-based packaging materials has boosted research on new approaches to improve their barrier performance and functionality. This chapter describes novel coating techniques, specifically electrospinning, for the development of nanostructured layers of interest in food packaging. One of the main innovative applications of electrospinning is the fabrication of nanostructured multilayers with tailor-made barrier properties and with the potential to incorporate functional substances within the coatings to impart active properties to the packaging material. Moreover, a good adhesion between layers can be attained using this technique which is a key factor for providing improved barrier properties.
