A compact CPW fed multiband antenna for WLAN/INSAT/WPAN applications

Abstract

Abstract This paper presents a detailed study on coplanar waveguide (CPW) fed multiband patch antenna for various wireless applications. The proposed antenna design is evolved from six successive stages which mainly focus toward the miniaturization in terms of frequency of operation and maintaining a constant overall dimension. The antenna is modeled on a single sided low cost FR4 substrate. The proposed design exhibits dual band (4.45 GHz and 7.40 GHz) operation due to mutual coupling between the conducting regions, the ground and the radiating element. The third band (2.45 GHz) is obtained by introducing a thin strip of length close to λg/4 at 2.45 GHz. The triple band proposed design with 2.45, 4.45 and 7.40 GHz operating bands makes the antenna suitable for WLAN, INSAT and WPAN applications respectively. The operating frequencies covers the bandwidth ranging from 2.36 to 2.58 GHz, 3.82–5.04 GHz and 7.16–7.64 GHz with a peak gain of 2.92 dB, 4.13 dB and 5.85 dB at 2.45, 4.45 and 7.40 GHz respectively. The proposed design is fabricated on FR4 epoxy substrate and the prototype is validated to have comparable S-parameters and radiation patterns with that of the simulated results.
