On the sound transmission loss of finite plates with constrained viscoelastic layer

Abstract

Abstract The modal summation approach is extended to the prediction of the sound transmission loss for a finite plate with constrained viscoelastic layer. The predicted transmission loss for a single leaf plate is compared with the results given by commercial FEM code and the reasons for the discrepancies are discussed. Then the predicted transmission loss for a damped sandwich plate is presented and the laboratory measurements is also provided for a comparison. Furthermore, the predicted transmission loss is compared with that of an equivalent fourth order equation in which the damping influence due to constrained viscoelastic layer is taken into account. The influence of plate parameters on the sound transmission of the plates in the low frequency range is discussed, and the methods is able to be used for optimizing damped sandwich plates.
