Abstract

Abstract This report explores the effects of particle shape and content of fines on the shear behavior of sand-fines mixtures using a two-dimensional discrete element method. The contributions of different contact types to the residual shear strength are quantified. Microscopic analysis of each contact type, including coordination number, normal contact force and their contributions to the principal stress components, reveals why the contribution of each contact type to the residual shear strength is varied. Finally, anisotropic analysis enables us to understand the microscopic mechanisms that cause the residual shear strength to be dependent on the particle shape and content of fines.
