Experiences in management of a Y-type urethral duplication

Abstract

Abstract Urethral duplications are rare congenital malformations with a wide range of anatomic variants. Surgical management of Y-type urethral duplications is challenging and requires careful prior diagnostic workup and planning. In this article we report our case of a boy with steno-atretic Y-type urethral duplication who underwent transrectal resection of the ectopic urethra, failed progressive augmentation by dilating the orthotopic urethra and finally reconstruction of the orthotopic urethra with a buccal mucosa free graft. Our literature review highlights the difficulties in choosing a fitting individualized approach to achieve the best possible outcome while avoiding unnecessary procedures.
