Bioremediation of organophosphorus pesticides in contaminated foodstuffs using probiotics
Abstract
Abstract Organophosphorus pesticides (OPPs) are widely used to control agricultural and domestic pests. Exposure to OPP residues poses serious health threats to human health through consumption of contaminated foods and water. Therefore, it is required to remove the OPP residues from foodstuffs for improvement of food safety. Microbial decontamination is an emerging biological approach that is considered as an efficient, safe, environmental-friendly and inexpensive strategy to remove hazardous chemicals. Probiotic microorganisms have been claimed to have the functional capacity to degrade pesticides. The overall aim of this review was to provide a comprehensive and critical view on interactions between OPPs and probiotics in various food and organism models.
