Abstract

Purpose To compare outcomes of Interagency Registry for Mechanical Assisted Circulatory Support (INTERMACS) profile 2 and 3 patients with and without intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) electively placed before Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) implantation. Methods Data analysis (from 2012 to 2016) of INTERMACS 2 and 3 profiles with pre-LVAD IABP ( Results Out of the INTERMACS 2; total 4,233 patients and INTERMACS 3; total 4,170 patients, the presumed elective IABP before LVAD placement was able to be propensity matched for 1003 and 729 patients, respectively. Paired T test was performed to statistically compare the outcomes between the two groups and are shown in table 1. Conclusion There was no significant difference in 30 day outcomes for pre-LVAD IABP compared to those without for the entire cohort (INTERMACS 1 and 2) and for individual cohorts of INTERMACS profiles 1 or 2. The logistic regression analysis (see table 2) also suggests that the highest risk for adverse outcome may be age and ischemic etiology but may not be mitigated by IABP use in any cohort of patients studied.
