Wastewater heat utilization through heat pumps: The case study of City of Rijeka

Abstract

Abstract In the last decade, sustainable management of waste is becoming a major part and purpose of legal framework, plans and strategies. This also includes sustainable management of wastewater and its utilization, especially considering material and energy recovery. Thermal energy can be recovered from raw wastewater, by utilizing temperature differences between wastewater and environment. Utilization of thermal energy from wastewater is becoming more popular worldwide, especially in covering of heat demands on city levels, through district heating systems. This paper considers thermal energy utilization from wastewater for covering heat demands in the City of Rijeka. Theoretical calculations have shown that wastewater heat can significantly cover the heat demand in the City of Rijeka, through district heating system.
