Using aluminum alloys in the electrochemical hydrogen production
Abstract
Abstract A new technique for the electrochemical hydrogen production was suggested and it uses aluminum alloys for the anode process depolarization. The depolarization effect is achieved through the dissolution of aluminum alloys in the alkaline solution. It has been established that the dissolution of aluminum is conditioned by the alloy composition, the alloy surface condition, the electrolyte temperature and the electrolyte concentration. In the case of electrochemical hydrogen production using the anode made of aluminum alloy the cell voltage is not exceeding 1 V; it is twice as low as the voltage of industrial electrolyzer. The obtained data can be used for the development of technique for the electrochemical hydrogen production that would enable the twofold reduction of electric power consumption and eliminate the oxygen release making thus the process safer.
