Blast analysis of functionally graded sandwich plates

Abstract

Abstract In this research, a layerwise based finite element model is presented to obtain the transient responses for functionally graded material sandwich (FGM-SW) plates under blast load. A first-order displacement field based layerwise theory with C0 continuity at layer interface has been used for the present analyses. The governing equations for the same are solved using Hamilton’s Principle in conjunction with Newmark beta average acceleration method to obtain blast response of FGM sandwich plates. The lower and upper facesheets are made of pure metal and pure ceramic, respectively and the material properties of the core is distributed from bottom to top from pure metal to pure ceramic by employing the rule of mixture. Three different cases of blast loading comprising of air-blast, step and sine are considered for the present analysis. The effect of various blast loads and power-law index is investigated on the transient behavior of functionally graded material sandwich plates.
