Drilling process improvement by Taguchi method

Abstract

Abstract This paper focuses on the optimization of drilling input variables using the Taguchi method to reduced drilling defect-delamination on carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP). CNC vertical machine used to conduct experimental work. The experimental work was performed on CFRP material using twist drill with different helix angle under dry cutting conditions. The spindle speed, feed rate and helix angle were considered as input variables for reduced delamination- defect. The optimum spindle speed 800\xa0rpm, feed rate 0.2\xa0mm/rev and helix angle 35 gave minimum delamination defect 1.1311. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) show feed rate is most influencing variable in CFRP drilling process. The Confirmation results show that Taguchi method was notably successful in the optimization of drilling parameters for reduce delamination (drilling defect).
