Abstract

Abstract In the present work the infrared absorption and Raman spectroscopies, dielectric constant and magnetic susceptibility measurements were used to investigate the phase transitions occurring between ordered and disordered crystals of [Co(OS(CH3)2)6](ClO4)2. The careful analysis of the FT-IR and FT-RS spectra registered at different temperatures allowed us to link observed phase transitions with the changes of both the crystal structure and the reorientational motions of the dimethylsulphoxide (DMSO) ligands and/or the ClO4− anions. The dielectric behavior indicated also that the high-temperature phases of [Co(OS(CH3)2)6](ClO4)2 exhibit ferroelectric properties. Magnetic measurements revealed slow magnetic relaxation behavior typical for field-induced Single Ion Magnets which makes [Co(OS(CH3)2)6](ClO4)2 a rare example of an octahedral 3d transition metal-based quantum nanomagnet.
