Opioid Overdose Prevention Training for Health Care Teams in Underserved Communities
Abstract
Abstract As opioid-related overdose deaths increase across the nation, the need for opioid and naloxone education is of the utmost importance. The metropolitan Chicago area is one of the hardest hit regions regarding opioid use and overdoses. This report focuses on advanced practice nurses’ efforts to provide opioid education and naloxone training to a network of primary care clinics in underserved communities surrounding downtown Chicago. Postsurvey data revealed positive results, showing an increased awareness regarding the opioid crisis and naloxone administration. Utilizing advanced practice nursing skillsets poses as an optimal opportunity to educate interdisciplinary teams, which can positively influence patient outcomes.
