Development of accretionary orogens: Preface

Abstract

Abstract This special issue celebrates the career of Cees van Staal, an icon of Appalachian geology who “retired” from the Geological Survey of Canada in 2017. The issue is an outcome of the symposium entitled “Development of Accretionary Orogens: a Symposium Celebrating the Career of Cees van Staal” that was held in Cees’s honour at the 2017 Geological Association of Canada/Mineralogical Association of Canada (GAC/MAC) meeting in Kingston, Ontario. The papers in this special issue simultaneously demonstrate recent advances in the understanding of accretionary orogens, Cees’s influence on this understanding, as well new data and concepts concerning their development. In keeping with the global reach of Cees’s research, this VSI is a contribution to the International Geological Correlation Program 648, Supercontinent Cycles and Global Geodynamics.
