Applications of Polymers in Gastric Drug Delivery

Abstract

Abstract Gastroretentive drug delivery system (GRDDS) is one of the key research areas in focus due to its ability to improve therapy by increasing residence time of drugs having narrow absorption window, demand residence in stomach due to their higher solubility, degradation in alkaline pH of intestine, or need local action in stomach. However, the design of such system requires addressing several physiological obstacles such as short gastric emptying time and its sensitivity to various physiologic factors. Various types of gastric delivery systems have evolved to overcome these obstacles such as floating, bioadhesive, swelling, and combinational delivery systems which are prepared using different polymers and formulation techniques. However, polymers play a very crucial role in the effectiveness of these dosage forms. The present chapter focuses on the literature review for various concerns and approaches in development of GRDDSs using different polymers, formulation approach, and their evaluation.
