Food waste generation and management: household sector

 

Abstract


Abstract This chapter gives an overview of the characteristics and sources of food wastes. An overview of food waste generation rate from various countries globally is reviewed and presented. Different lifestyles and sociodemographic factors have significant effects on food waste generation, depending on consumer and producer behaviors. Qualitative and quantitative information on food waste are discussed in relation to existing management approaches. The household sector is a focus of the waste-generating source in this chapter. Best practices and innovative approaches to properly manage and reduce impacts, and even create cobenefits from food waste management, in different countries are examined and highlighted to provide lessons learned in this chapter.
