Fluoridation-induced high-performance catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction: A mini review

 
 
 

Abstract


Abstract Fluoridation has recently been found to be significant in the fabrication of oxygen evolution reaction catalysts due to its influence on structure transformation, surface engineering, electronic state tuning, and the easy formation and exposure of active phases. Herein, we summarize recent advances in this area, including catalyst fabrication and performance in the water-splitting reaction. The catalysts are classified into transition metal fluorides, fluorine-doped and oxyfluoride compounds. All the fluorine-containing catalysts are reported to be efficient for active phase formation because of the increased strength of ionic bonds and the exposure of active sites caused by the fluorine etching effect. The problems and challenges of this approach are also discussed, and it is hoped that this review will be helpful to the scientific community.
