Optimization Of Turning Parameters On Surface Roughness Based On Taguchi Technique

Abstract

Abstract In metal cutting and manufacturing industries, surface finish and strength of product are very crucial in determining the quality. Good surface finish assures quality of the product. The effect and optimization of machining parameters on surface roughness in a turning operation is investigated by using the Taguchi method. The experimental studies are conducted under varying cutting speeds, feed rates, and depths of cut and considering different aluminum alloys i.e. Aluminium alloy 6061, Aluminium alloy 6063 and Aluminium alloy 6082. In this project Taguchi technique and the utility concept, a multi-response optimization method has been employed to determine the optimal process parameters for simultaneously minimizing the surface roughness during the turning of three different Aluminium alloys on CNC lathe machine by using coated carbide tool. The experiments are planned as per the L9 orthogonal array i.e. by considering three levels and four factors and the optimization is done by using S/N ratio.
