Abstract

Abstract A novel bandwidth-enhanced polarization division multiplexed intensity modulation-direct detection (IM-DD) short reach fiber optical communication system is proposed and experimentally demonstrated by utilizing a dual polarization-dual parallel Mach Zehnder modulator (DP-DPMZM). By adjusting bias voltages of the DP-DPMZM, the chromatic dispersion induced frequency notches can be shifted to higher frequencies, which indicates the transmission 3\u202fdB-bandwidth of proposed system can be much more enhanced comparing with the conventional IM-DD system. A proof-of-concept experiment is performed for dual parallel Mach Zehnder modulator-direct detection (DPMZM-DD) system and DP-DPMZM-direct detection (DP-DPMZM-DD) system, whose performances are compared with the conventional Mach Zehnder modulator-direct detection (MZM-DD) system over 100\u202fkm standard single-mode fiber transmission. The experimental results show that the DPMZM-DD system and DP-DPMZM-DD system have a significant improvement of the bit error rate performance, compared to its counterpart MZM-DD system.
