It is a fascinating and accessible account of the events which led up to the establishment of the post of nuncio. This piece, bringing together an impressive body of data from primary sources, nicely lays out a politically and ecclesiastically complex situation in the United Kingdom and Ireland, and also deals with the larger European context. It is an excellent, original piece of scholarship which makes a valuable contribution to the field.’
