National professional society augments career development and leadership amongst neonatal fellows and early career neonatologists

Abstract

Introduction: Fellows and early career neonatologists Fellowship trainees in neonatal-perinatal medicine (NPM) and early career neonatologists (ECN) require life-long mentorship for career development. In 3 short years, during fellowship, fellows must master procedural skills, build clinical acumen, produce a scholarly activity product, and seek their first job in neonatology. Barriers to the successful grooming of academic and clinical neonatologists during fellowship include: high clinical demand, a lack of protected time for scholarly activity, and limited research mentors [1, 2]. Fellowship educational curricula differ greatly between institutions [3, 4]. ECN face hurdles after graduation as they adapt to new jobs and learn institution-specific systems while navigating tenure or promotion tracks [5, 6] Without the structure and training environment
