CV benefits of finerenone in T2DM and CKD

Abstract

0123456789();: Substituting regular table salt (100% sodium chloride) with an alternative containing 25% potassium chloride reduces the rate of stroke, major cardiovascular events and all-cause death. This finding from the SSaSS trial was presented at the eSC Congress 2021. Salt substitution has been shown to reduce blood pressure, but whether this effect translates into a reduction in cardiovascular events was uncertain. “Because of the great potential of salt substitution as an effective public health measure to prevent cardiovascular disease, direct evidence on salt substitution in reducing the risk of cardiovascular events was urgently needed,” comments Yangfeng Wu, co-principal investigator of the trial. Therefore, the researchers conducted an openlabel, cluster-randomized trial involving 20,995 individuals from 600 villages in rural China. The trial participants had a history of stroke (72.6%) and/or were aged ≥60 years and had high blood pressure (88.4%). The villages were randomly assigned to use the salt substitute or regular salt. After follow-up (mean 4.74 years), the rates of stroke (rate ratio (RR) 0.86), major cardiovascular events (RR 0.87) and all-cause death (RR 0.88) were all significantly reduced with P R E V E n T I O n
