International migrants in China: Civility, contradiction, and confusion
Abstract
China’s rise as a destination for international migrants is raising important new questions for both research and policy. Within China itself, and within academic studies of migration, the new waves of ‘foreigners’, appearing in both urban and rural areas, are raising new challenges of community cohesion, citizenship, and multiculturalism. Global migrants from both North and South are attracted by the new opportunities accompanying the ‘opening up’ of China, arriving with hopes of making new lives and livelihoods. How China is responding to the diverse range of new citizens is the focus of this book. This chapter outlines this background and explains the rationale for the volume and introduces the contributors.
