Abstract


Before 1900, quality was associated with craftmanship. The tools of the craft were learned over a lifetime, or even across generations as techniques were passed down. An individual would learn the trade, and how to do it well. Around 1900, as large industrial organizations began the process of standardization, measurement became key. Parts made by different individuals had to fit together at a later stage of production. Without accurate measurements, it would be difficult to assure fit later in the process. From the 1920s onward, a heavy emphasis was placed on statistical process control. Through the use of control charts, it was possible to monitor the stability of processes. Starting with the ideas of Montgomery (1976, first edition), Box, Hunter, and Hunter (1978, first edition), and Taguchi and Yokoyama (1993) the emphasis shifted to designing experiments to build quality into the product or process.
