A critical discourse analysis of ideological translations of Arabic quotations in English language newspapers

Abstract

ABSTRACT Sociocultural differences influenced translation and prompted researchers of translation to explore different sociocultural perspectives using varied sources of data. I will analyse the translation of Arabic quotations in British and American newspapers using CDA. In order to highlight differences between portrayals of the Middle East there, The Guardian and The New York Times are selected. By comparing and contrasting the cultural values, social systems and ideologies reflected in the linguistic structures and strategies employed by both newspapers in presenting quoted Arabic statements, this study suggests that translators/editors working for these newspapers tend to reflect the ideology of those publishers and/or target readers.
