Radiotherapy With or Without Chemotherapy in Muscle-Invasive Bladder Cancer

Abstract

This randomized study assessed the role of synchronous chemotherapy with intravenous 5-fluorouracil and mitomycin in patients with muscle-invasive bladder cancer undergoing radiotherapy compared to radiotherapy only. This study demonstrated improved 2-year locoregional recurrence-free survival and also suggested improved overall survival favoring combination therapy. High-grade, primarily gastrointestinal toxic events were increased with combination therapy, while cystectomy rates were decreased.
