Educational Resource Review: Antibiotic resistance: people will die when antibiotics fail

Abstract

This resource is a short podcast (30 min) that will be of interest to those working in antimicrobial resistance (AMR) across human, animal and environmental settings in all countries. It is not specifically focused on healthcare or use of antibiotics so is probably more aimed at the scientific community and public with an interest in science than those working in antimicrobial stewardship (AMS). While informational and interesting it does focus mostly on the research areas of the scientist who is being interviewed, covering use of antibiotics in animals, some references to global AMR and how whole genome sequencing in combination with big data will improve our understanding of AMR. The podcast is hosted on SoundCloud and may require registration on some platforms. Compatible with Google Chrome and Safari (iPhone) but not with Internet Explorer (would not play). Other browsers not tested. The resource is provided by a reputable source, a research institute organization that provides scientific services and education and whose work involves computational science and biotechnology. This podcast is the first in a series on various scientific topics aligned with the institute’s work. The podcast was produced in early 2020 therefore does not describe the threat of global AMR in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Overall this resource will be of interest to those wanting to learn about the ‘big picture’ around AMR and how scientific developments will increase our understanding of it but is not directly relevant to healthcare professionals or those focused on AMS.
