Designing and Feasibility Study of Net Metering System upon Installing Rooftop Solar PV: A Case Study at MIST, Bangladesh
Abstract
There is an increasing need of source of alternative energy in a rapidly growing country like Bangladesh. Among all the renewable energy sources, the most potential is solar energy. By utilizing solar energy, a huge amount of electricity has been produced so far, the majority of which is received from the solar home system in remote off-grid areas. Besides, net metering system has been introduced in Bangladesh, a new policy to increase the supply of electricity. The objective of this study is to make a case study upon designing and feasibility study of the PV system installed at MIST which is a renowned engineering educational institution of Bangladesh. According to this investigation, an increase in electricity production, cost savings and reduction in carbon emission were observed. This study evaluates the economic feasibility of solar PV system along with a net meter. Two advanced application software have been used for the sake of calculation and comparison with manually determined results. HOMER has been used for generation of the load curve for one year and also used for feasibility and cost calculation. HELIOSCOPE has been used to design the rooftop solar PV and for calculating the energy produced by solar PV for around a year.
