Enabling the DVB-I reference client for 5G Broadcast reception - Verification of the overall system

Abstract

In the last three years, the Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB) Project has adopted internet-centric standards that are supposed to offer a television-like experience for over-the-top streaming, e.g. service lists, content guides and zapping. In addition to Broadband, the connection to DVB Broadcast systems is also part of the specification. In order to reach mobile devices via terrestrial radio transmission, the extension to 5G Broadcast, standardized by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), is required. 5G Broadcast is currently being tested in several field trials worldwide. Hereby, a local set-up uses a protocol stack like in IPTV that cannot be displayed in a web browser application, e.g. the DVB- I (Internet) reference client. After introducing DVB-I and the 5G Broadcast transmission system, the paper introduces an extension of the receiver system to incorporate downlink-only 5G Broadcast signals in the reference client.
