Analysis of Corona Initiation Characteristics of Suspended Conductor

Abstract

In order to study the initiation characteristics of corona discharge at both ends of the suspended conductor, a corona discharge model is established, which based on hydrodynamic equation and plasma chemical reaction process. The development process of electron density and space charge density, the electric field distribution and the ion characteristic curve are simulated and analyzed. Besides, the corona discharge experiment is carried out in the negative background field. The results show that the corona discharge at the top end is radial, which is mainly composed of positive space charges, and the number density of ions differs by about 2 to 3 orders of magnitude; by contrast, the corona discharge at the bottom end is spherical, which is composed of concentrated positive space charges and scattered negative space charges, and the number density of positive ions is slightly higher than that of negative ions. Due to the polarity effect of the suspended conductor, it is difficult to initiate corona at the top, while it is easy to initiate corona at the bottom. After the bottom corona is stabilized, the top corona initiation will be promoted.
