Research on lightning overvoltage in Ecuador 230kV GIS substation based on EMTP-RV

Abstract

The simulation model of a new 230 kV GIS substation in Ecuador was established by EMTP-RV. The lightning overvoltage levels of the main equipment in the substation under different modes of thunder wave invasion, different tower and substation operation are calculated, and the insulation coordination of each equipment is checked. The results show that the closer the lightning strike location is to the substation, the higher the lightning overvoltage is. Generally, the lightning overvoltage is the highest in the operation of a single transformer, double busbar, and double-circuit transmission line. Under different lightning striking points and operation modes, the lightning overvoltage on the main equipment does not exceed its lightning withstand voltage level, and has a certain insulation margin, which meets the requirements of safe operation.
