Direct Power Control with Space Vector Modulation Applied for the Brushless DC Motor

Abstract

Several control strategies have been developed for the brushless dc motor, two of them are the direct torque control and the direct power control. In this paper, the direct power control strategy has been improved by replacing the bang-bang power controller with a space vector pulse width modulation technique, providing a faster speed response and faster power transfer. A different method for estimating the power is also developed to provide easier implementation. To analyze its performance, the developed strategy was compared to the direct power control with bang-bang controller and the direct torque control. Speed, torque and power were measured and analyzed with simulations in the Matlab/Simulink environment.
