A Simulation Based Comparison and Performance Analysis of EDFA for Various Types of Pulses

Abstract

Optical signal can propagates through an optical fiber for very long distance. However after travelling a certain distance the transmitted signal gets attenuated due to different nonlinear effects present in the fiber. As a result of the degradation due to fiber nonlinearities the signal becomes too weak that it becomes almost undetectable. Before reaching to this condition the weak signal must be amplified by using proper optical amplifier. The performance of an optical amplifier depends upon the various input pulses used for transmission, such as Return-to-Zero (RZ), Non return to Zero (NRZ), Raised Cosine (RC) and Gaussian pulse. In this paper the performance of Erbium doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) has been compared for the above mentioned modulating pulse types. The performance has been verified for different parameters namely, Q factor, Biterror-rate, power output, frequency spectrum etc. The result discussed here may be useful for designing an efficient optical network for long haul all optical communication.
