Modeling FACTS Device Impact on Voltage Flicker in the Electric Arc Furnace Supply System

Abstract

This paper discusses the issue of modeling voltage flicker compensation devices in electric arc furnace power supply system. Simple algorithms of modeling the arc furnace and the compensating device are presented. In the proposed model, the statistical indices of arc furnace active and reactive powers and their harmonic approximation in each time interval of one second are used. Such approach allows us to use the index $\\Delta U_{10}$ to estimate the equivalent effect of voltage fluctuations. The most annoying voltage fluctuations are within the frequency range of 1-25 Hz, and the efficiency of compensation devices in EAF power supply systems is dependent by their ability to reduce these fluctuations. The objective of the work is to create a simple tool for comparative assessment of compensation devices impact on voltage flicker in the EAF power supply system.
