A Beam Alignment MIMO Architecture Based on Directional Antenna Radiation

Abstract

In this paper, a beam aligned MIMO (BAMIMO)architecture is proposed, based on the directivity nature of the high gain MIMO antenna port at millimeter wave (mmW)band, with a special attention on the pure line-of-sight (LOS)channel. From the computation results of channel capacity gain (CG)and the singular values it can be seen that, by this BAMIMO system, the CG of the MIMO system with directive radiation can approach that of the omnidirective system with sufficiently large port spacing. The most remarkable characteristic of this BAMIMO is that full degrees of freedom and a high CG can still be obtained if port spacing is zero in either side of the communication link in free space channel, which cannot be acquired by the system with omnidirectional radiation.
