Sustainable Masks: Revisiting the Design & Features of eco-friendly cost effective Masks
Abstract
The Covid-19 pandemic has put a pause to almost everything this year, due to how fast this dangerous virus has spread from person to person in so many countries in such a short period around the world, and the need for protection against the Corona virus to prevent contracting and spreading it when the vaccine is still in the making has caused people to wear masks to prevent the spread and infection of the virus. As masks is such a broad topic, sustainability and design for a better mask was focused on, with research on the types of different masks available, the pros and cons of each, and finally the materials that would make the most efficient cloth mask. A survey was also taken from the general public (including doctors) with over 200 responses as the mask is being made for the general public to reduce the wastage in non-sustainable masks. It was found that a majority of people cared about the environmental effects of the masks and wanted reusable cloth masks. This meant that there is a demand for reusable masks, allowing investors and designers to look into these options and make a difference for the long run such as better designs, materials etc.
