A Solo Source Based 27-Level Asymmetrical Cascaded H-Bridge Converter Fed Open Ended PMSM Drive

Abstract

In this paper,an electric drive train suitable to electric vehicle application is analyzed with a cascaded multilevel inverter. In most of the ev drive trains seeks the usage of ac traction motors, which requires a suitable inverter topology with reduced harmonic level. However for high power applications,it requires more number of power switches, issues with balancing of voltages across H- bridge cells, increased usage of isolated DC sources and it requires complex PWM techniques. This paper gives the idea of a multilevel inverter with fewer number of switches to generate 27 voltage levels. A solo source typically a electric vehicle battery is used to power the system and the output of the inverter is connected across the Open ended winding PMSM drive. Here a multiwinding fly-buck converter and a half bridge bidirectional converter is used to provide DC source required for the main and auxiliary H-bridge cells respectively. Simulation results are indicated in this paper to verify the effectiveness of the proposed approach, for an input of 120V DC and output of 240Vrms in MATLAB 8.1.
