Research on Integrated Metasurface Lens for High Gain Multibeam System in Package Application

 
 
 
 

Abstract


An integrated metamaterial-based planar lens fed by linearly polarized patch driven metasurface antenna is presented and characterized for spatial beamforming and multibeam system. A double-layered Jerusalem cross unit cell is adopted for design of metasurface lens. The integrated ultrathin lens with the size of 9.4λ0×9.4λ0×0.097λ0 (λ0 is the free-space wavelength at the frequency of 29 GHz) is achieved to operate over the range from 26.8 GHz to 31.2 GHz with a gain ripple of 3 dB and a maximum gain of 22.54 dBi. By using discrete antenna sources separately distributed at different locations, the proposed lens antenna achieves a wide beam scanning range about ± 33° with a gain ripple of 4.2 dB. The proposed ultrathin metasurface lens without airgap realizes high gain and wide scanning angle, which is promising for the 5G millimeter wave system in package application.
