Internet-of-Things Based Smart Laboratory Environment Monitoring System

Abstract

Monitoring of the automated smart laboratory environment allows people or employees in any facilities to have the advantage to do their jobs with accuracy, comfort, and efficiency. There have been so many important advancements in the area of an employee s manual routine tasks that can definitely be automated. Nowadays, people value their mobile devices or mobile phones. Therefore, these mobile phones can be utilized to design an Internet-of-Things (IoT) based smart laboratory that checks environment variable to automate multiple sensors in the laboratory settings, analyzing data and generating visual reports from various sensor output remotely. This study is about the development of a mobile application for system control, notifications and alarms, device automation, environment status monitoring, and data viewing in a medical laboratory facility. Monitoring of biosafety of human, other living matters and experimental specimen s safety are the main concern in laboratories. An example of biosafety includes compromising medical equipment s reliability due to some environment factors like temperature and air quality. This study developed a mobile application with the use of sensors for data input for environment variables such as temperature, humidity, and detection of power outages are to be used. This paper presents the system design of an automated laboratory environment monitoring in a mobile application by controlling the thresholds of sensors installed in medical or experimental facilities to ease the task of using the manual or traditional method of monitoring a room or location. The usage of microcontroller devices, sensors, printed circuit boards, and other essential devices was tested carefully as different process rules were cautiously analyzed. The testing result of the developed system, in accordance with the system design requirements, passed all essential criteria to develop a fully functional IoT-based smart laboratory environment monitoring application.
