The Study of a Canned Pet Food Supply Chain in Thailand

Abstract

Nowadays, people who have a pet, concern about pet food get proper nutrition for growth and safety. Canned pet food is an alternative for them due to its convenience, long shelf life, diversity, and safety. We studied canned pet food manufacturing in Thailand. We found that the demand for pet food is increasing every year and the factory had to increase the capacity. The objective of this study was to explore and analyze the current supply chain of the canned pet food manufacturer by using Integration Definition for Function Modeling (IDEF0). It explained the overall flow of business and current key activities. Then, we analyzed the current problems and recommend how to improve the efficiency of the supply chain. Currently, there was a lack of systematic data collection, complicated work instruction in the quality control department. This resulted in a high turnover rate of staff and a high defect rate in production. Finally, we recommend using the automatic data collection program and proper inspection equipment to increase data record accuracy. For data analysis, the high defect rate causes should be identified by the why-why analysis, fishbone diagram, and causal loop diagram including risk evaluation. In summary, our research can increase the capability to maintain a competitive advantage in a disruptive era.
