Design of a Compact W-band Planar Dipole Antenna on a Single Silicon Substrate

Abstract

In order to meet the rapid increasing demands of the broad bandwidth and high data rate for wireless communication and radar system, a compact planar dipole antenna on a single silicon substrate (relative dielectric permittivity of 11.9) is proposed. The proposed dipole antenna is fed by substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) without any complicate Balun structure. A grounded coplanar waveguide (GCPW) to SIW transition structure with $50\\ \\Omega$ impedance is also designed for antenna measurement. The simulated results indicate that the operating frequency range with return loss less than −10 dB is from 89.5 GHz to 101 GHz, corresponding 12.07% relative bandwidth. A high antenna gain ranging from 4.7 dBi to 6.03 dBi over the operating frequency is obtained and a good radiation pattern in E-plane and H-plane is also observed. Since our proposed dipole antenna has a simple structure, low fabrication cost and compatibility with the existing CMOS technology, we are convinced that it can be used properly in active phased array antenna, wireless communication, image processing and other millimeter-wave (mmW) applications.
