Voltage Fault Ride-Through Operation of Solar PV Units: A Review and Way Forward

Abstract

Fault ride-through, in particular, the voltage fault ride-through operation is being mandated from renewable energy units by different grid codes in view of the increasing threat to the voltage stability of the power system network. In this context, this paper presents a brief review of different aspects of the voltage fault ride-through operation of a two-stage solar PV unit. The recent standards pertaining to the voltage fault ride-through operation of solar PV units for different nations across the world are presented followed by a discussion on the IEEE 1547:2018 standard. Further, the capability and response of the solar PV units for voltage fault ride-through operation are explored and methods are suggested to facilitate reliable ride-through operation. Finally, a way forward for the voltage fault ride-through operation of the solar PV units is suggested.
